I think Upholstery cleaning should probably be done more often than carpet cleaning.  If you have kids or pets or a lot of people in your living space then your upholstery probably needs cleaning.

If you live near a busy street or have your windows and doors open a lot your upholstery will absorb a lot more dirt than you expect.  Carpet and Upholstery act as air filters.  When dust lands on your furniture it will often get agitated down into the fabric by someone sitting on it.

Our clothes absorb anything that they come in contact with.  If someone in your household works a dirty job and then ends up on the furniture then a lot of that dirt is being transferred to your sofa and chairs.

You have more contact with your Upholstery than your Carpet.  Most people only contact the carpet with their shoes and rarely touch it.  We tend to spend a lot of time sitting on our furniture.  Most people vacuum their carpet regularly but not their sofas, chairs or other upholstered furniture.

How often do you dust your house?

If you dust your house often then you know that a lot of dirt that settles from the air onto your chairs and couches also.  When you sit on the sofa and chair furniture then this dirt gets worked into the fabric.  Regular vacuuming of your furniture will help.  The natural oils from your body and pets that transfers to your upholstery will help to bond the dirt to your sofa, couch or chairs.

Pets on Upholstered Furniture

If you have pets they are most likely on your furniture.  Even if they are trained to stay off the furniture they will be on it.  When I was a kid we had a German Shorthair Pointer.  She was a great hunting dog and a great family dog.  She was very well trained and stayed in the kitchen and just inside the living room when we were home.  If we left the door from the kitchen open when we were gone we would find a warm spot on the couch when we got home.  She had mainly white hair and that would show her spot on the couch also.

Pets transfer a lot of body oils as well as hair to your Upholstered furniture.  It happens just a little bit at a time but it builds up quickly.
